I lived on a farm in the summers growing up in Wisconsin.  I would love to be a self sustaining organic farmer in another life.  I think that if you want to educate people on farms and their importance and contribution to our world, not just our country, you need to start in the schools.  Non farmers have no idea where the food they are eating comes from.  It will be very hard to educate adults because they are so dispersed.  But if you could get to the kids in school, you have an audience.  There you can teach kids the importance of farms and the people that farm them and win the respect of the next generation.  Maybe even reach their parents.  Get in front of them on career day, every school has it.  Talk to the Parent Teacher Association national headquarters.  I've seen information on programs and classes they are running to teach kids to grow vegetables, compost, fertilize,..take care of the environment at the same time.  Why not extend it to farm animals and where food comes from?  The process it takes to grow an animal, where the feed comes from, where the manure goes...The wonderful lifestyle that goes along with it.  Work ethics, responsibility, families eating real food together, helping your neighbors, you know it all, you grew up on a farm.  I don't think you can grab the attention of the average person and teach them the passion it takes to farm with the info I was reading on how milk is priced (confusing...uninteresting, why should they read it?).  You have to make them want to be a part of it.     Nowadays, I support the farmers by buying organic dairy products and organic produce.   If I don't, I risk supporting a corporation, not a farm family.  Plus, for me and my family, it is a healthier choice so that in the future my family won't be lining the pockets of the giant insurance and pharmaceutical companies who want to cash in on the cancer that all the pesticides we ate caused.  I love farmers and the farming lifestyle.  Farmers need to be self sustaining and not rely on our government for prices.   You will never get what you are worth.  Bigger is not better.  It is unhealthier.  Go back to being debt free and self sustaining.  The organic food movement is going gang busters and from what I've read, those farmers are making better money.  Demand is high for organic food and produce
